Why a tuxedo

How a Tuxedo Takes the Guesswork Out of Dressing

Black tie is a ready-made formula: fewer choices, fewer mistakes, and only the fit to get right. Why a tuxedo answers the question of what to wear to a party.

"What shall I wear tonight" is a question many gentlemen ask themselves before a party, often at the last minute, in front of a full wardrobe with nothing that feels right. The tuxedo offers a tidy way out: it is a formula that already exists, so you do not have to think much. The one thing left is to make sure the suit fits you.

A formula already written

With an ordinary suit you must decide a long list of things: which colour, which shirt, tie or no tie, which shoes, which belt, how to mix patterns. Each decision is a place to go wrong and a moment of doubt.

Black tie is different. The formula was settled long ago: satin-faced jacket, braided trousers, white shirt, black bow tie, cummerbund or waistcoat, patent shoes. You do not have to be creative, only to follow the items one by one. The detail of each is in our guide to how to put a tuxedo outfit together.

This is where people often misunderstand: the formula does not make you dull, it makes your mind lighter. If you want creativity, it lives in small things such as the pocket square or cufflinks.

Fewer choices, fewer mistakes

The paradox of freedom is that the more options you have, the easier it is to choose badly and the more anxious you feel. A full wardrobe gives endless combinations and endless ways to feel you picked wrongly.

Black tie narrows the choices in the right places. Jacket colour: black or midnight blue. Shirt: white. Bow tie: black. Shoes: patent. With the variables fixed, the room for error shrinks. You can look at the outfit already on the hanger and know it is right, without weighing each detail in the mirror.

The piece on the philosophy of uniformity in black tie goes further into why the system was built this way.

Only the fit needs to be right

Once the formula is given, the only remaining difference is the fit. Two men wear the same tuxedo to the same formula, but one is well fitted and the other is loose at the shoulder with a baggy hem, and the result looks like two different outfits.

That means you put your effort into what is worth the effort: choosing a suit cut to your frame, with the shoulder in the right place, a sliver of shirt cuff showing below the sleeve, trousers falling straight. Prepared once, it need not be worried over every time a party comes. With a made-to-measure suit the fit is adjusted to your own measurements; see fit matters more than the label.

A classic model such as TUX-079, black with black satin shawl lapels, worn with a pleated white shirt, is an easy frame that does not ask you to style much more.

It saves preparation time

Time is something many men notice late. When you do not have to deliberate over what to wear, you save:

  • The time standing before the wardrobe trying one outfit after another.
  • The time running out to buy an extra shirt or pair of shoes because the old ones seemed wrong.
  • The worry in the car on the way to the venue, wondering whether you are dressed correctly.

When everything for a black-tie evening is kept in one place, jacket, trousers, shirt, bow tie, cufflinks and shoes, preparation shrinks to a few minutes. Keep them together as a set, not scattered.

When the formula loosens

Sometimes the invitation says "creative black tie" or a relaxed dress code. Then you have more room: colour, velvet, a patterned bow tie. Still keep the classic frame and change only one or two items. If you are unsure, ask the host, or go with the classic black. The guide to what black tie means helps you read each type of invitation.
