New Year's Eve Party: Which Tuxedo to Wear on 31 December

A New Year's Eve countdown allows velvet, metallic weaves and a bolder bow tie. How to choose, prepare for a night past midnight, and cover a rooftop.

New Year's Eve is one of the few evenings when a tuxedo is allowed to have fun. The black tie frame stays in place, with satin lapels, braided trousers and a bow tie, but you gain room for velvet, a metallic weave or a stronger colour that would look overdone at a formal gala. The real question is not how the jacket looks at eight in the evening. It is how comfortable it still feels when the clock passes midnight.

What the festive mood allows

A countdown party is not an awards ceremony. Nobody grades every detail; people come to celebrate, take photographs and dance. So the rules loosen in three places: fabric (velvet, cloth with a sheen), colour (burgundy, deep midnight blue, forest green) and accessories (velvet bow tie, silver or brass cufflinks, a patterned pocket square).

The limits remain elsewhere. Keep one focal point instead of stacking several. A metallic jacket calls for a plain white shirt and a black bow tie; a velvet jacket calls for restrained accessories. If the invitation says black tie, treat a coloured or metallic jacket as a permitted variation of black tie, not an escape from it.

Velvet and metallic: how to use them

The velvet jacket descends from the smoking jacket, originally a relaxed garment worn after dinner, so it brings a warmth and intimacy that suits New Year's Eve. Velvet absorbs light and gives depth to dark shades such as burgundy, midnight blue and smoke grey. TUX-131 is a burgundy velvet jacket with black satin peak lapels, while TUX-012 is a smoke-grey velvet with a shawl collar, quieter and easier to style.

Metallic cloth needs a good tailor and the right lighting. Under warm room lights it looks rich; under harsh white light or a phone flash it can look cheap if the yarn is stiff. Look at TUX-050, a black metallic suit with peak lapels, and TUX-069, a black metallic blazer with brass buttons. Both belong to the Statement collection, which gathers patterned and metallic pieces.

Coloured jacket or standout bow tie: how far to go

Level Approach Suits
Discreet Black or midnight blue tuxedo, velvet bow tie or coloured pocket square Hotel ballrooms, invitations that say black tie
Moderate Velvet or burgundy jacket, black trousers and bow tie Company parties, friends at a pool bar or lounge
Bold Metallic or jacquard jacket, very restrained accessories Themed parties, clubs, countdowns with no strict dress code

A tailor's rule of thumb: if the jacket already speaks loudly, do not let the bow tie speak too. Only one of the two should stand out.

Preparing for a party that runs past midnight

A New Year's Eve often stretches from early evening into the small hours, and you may be on your feet more than seated. A few things to sort out beforehand:

  • Shoes: wear a pair you have already broken in. New patent shoes can blister your heels within a few hours.
  • Shirt: choose breathable cotton and avoid heavy cloth, because a crowded room warms up as the night goes on. When you loosen your collar at midnight, a hand-tied bow tie still looks better than a pre-tied one.
  • Spares: a second pocket square in the inside pocket. Fireworks, champagne and stand-up food are all sources of stains.
  • Colour: dark shades such as black, navy and burgundy hide marks better than ivory.
  • Waist and shoulders: test sitting, raising your arms for a photo and bouncing to the music during the fitting. A made-to-measure jacket should feel easy in all three.

A coat for the rooftop

Many countdown parties in Saigon are held on rooftops. A late-December evening in the city is not deeply cold, but the breeze at height is cooler than at street level, especially once the sweat from dancing has dried. A thin black or charcoal overcoat to the knee is a tidy choice, with a white silk scarf if you like the traditional touch. Avoid windbreakers and puffer jackets, which ruin the line of the shoulders. If you are welcoming the new year somewhere properly cold, read wearing a tuxedo in cold weather.

Advice from the Mon Amie workroom

If you want a piece reserved for New Year's Eve, order before the year-end party season starts; making time depends on the style and the fitting schedule, and your consultant will confirm it when you are measured. You can also read about metallic tuxedos or book a fitting at a showroom to see the fabrics under real evening light.
