Charity Ball: What to Wear to a Charity Gala

Charity galas usually say black tie. Choose a refined tuxedo over a showy one, and stay comfortable through the auction, the dancing and time on stage.

A charity ball invitation usually says black tie, and the right answer is a refined tuxedo: polished enough to respect the organisers without turning the wearer into the centre of attention. The purpose of the evening is to raise funds, so your clothes should say good taste rather than how much you spent. That sounds simple, but a few details deserve attention.

Black tie is the usual standard

Most charity balls and fundraising galas, in Vietnam and abroad, follow a black tie dress code. If the card says so, wear a black or midnight blue tuxedo with satin lapels, braided trousers, a white shirt, black bow tie and patent shoes. If it says "black tie optional", a dark suit is still accepted, but if you already own a tuxedo, using it is the safe move. To understand the levels of dress code, see what to wear to a gala dinner or what black tie means.

Some organisers add a colour theme, such as a blue night or a gold night. In that case keep the tuxedo dark and bring the theme colour in through the bow tie, pocket square or cummerbund. It suits the theme without making you buy an outfit for a single use.

Refined rather than showy

There is a common paradox at charity galas: everyone wants to look impressive, yet the most seasoned guests dress most quietly. A few principles to remember:

  • Choose a close, accurate fit over large patterns or loud metallic cloth. A well-cut black or midnight suit such as TUX-060 or TUX-105 already shows taste.
  • Keep accessories classic: plain cufflinks, a slim watch, a white pocket square folded flat. An oversized watch or heavy jewellery tends to feel at odds with the spirit of the evening.
  • Hold back on colour. Wine red or deep blue remains elegant; a bright, flashy suit draws attention in the wrong place.
  • A pared-back approach is a handsome choice in itself; the article on the minimalist tuxedo covers it in detail.

Auction and dancing: dress for movement

A charity gala often includes two activities that demand movement: the auction (raising a paddle, standing to speak) and dancing. The jacket must let you raise your arm without the shoulders riding up toward your neck, and let you sit without pulling at the waist. So when you try on, do these movements in front of the mirror: lift your arm high, bend slightly, sit and stand again.

For dancing, trousers should not be too tight, and patent soles need enough grip to glide naturally without slipping. A handkerchief to blot perspiration, kept in the trouser pocket, is worth carrying. If the evening includes a long dance programme, read about dance nights and balls.

Sponsors on stage

Some sponsors or representatives are invited on stage to present a plaque, receive recognition or speak. You will then stand under lights and cameras, so:

  • Check the collar, shoulders and trouser hem beforehand. A slack or creased jacket shows up under stage lighting.
  • Button the jacket when standing and unbutton it when seated, a simple rule that many forget.
  • If you hold a microphone or a presentation board, keep your pockets flat; do not stuff a phone or thick wallet in them.
  • Angle your body slightly for the photograph with the plaque. It improves the shoulder line and keeps the tuxedo looking clean.

If you sit near the stage, it is also wise to have a spare shirt on hand, since a long evening of activities can leave a white shirt damp or marked by wine.

A fitting at Mon Amie

If you are regularly invited during gala season, a properly made black or midnight blue tuxedo will serve for years, since the classic cut dates slowly. Book a fitting at a showroom and a consultant will measure you and advise on cloth, lapel and the level of restraint that suits you.
