The deep burgundy, almost brown, catches the eye first, but up close the whole jacket carries a tonal paisley pattern woven into the cloth, rising into view wherever the light falls. Black satin peak lapels contrast sharply with the matte surface beside them. It fastens with a single button, with a jetted chest pocket holding a red silk pocket square, a clearly shaped waist and a row of small buttons at each cuff.

This is the jacket for galas, end-of-year parties or concerts where you do not want to blend in. In the photograph it is worn with a white shirt, a burgundy tie in a tonal pattern and plain black trousers, a safe pairing that still has depth. For a more formal look, swap to a black bow tie and the outfit becomes complete evening dress.
