Charcoal verging on black, the cloth has a fine pebble weave that catches light in soft patches rather than a flat sheen. The shawl lapel is one continuous black satin curve from collar to button with no notch, which makes the chest look fuller and the shoulders more assured. It has a single button, two satin-jetted hip pockets set flush, a row of close-set black buttons at each cuff and a bright metal lily lapel pin.

This is right for events, galas, opening ceremonies and company dinners. Pair it with a white wing-collar shirt, a medium-width black bow tie and trousers in the same tone, and the look is complete. Polished black leather shoes, and no belt at all: eveningwear does not need one.

The shawl lapel is the hardest lapel to make, because the curve has to be perfectly continuous, with no break at any point. Mon Amie makes each jacket to your own measurements, and our tailor aligns the thread and presses the lapel by hand to keep the curve even along its whole length.
