Tuxedo linings: cupro (Bemberg), viscose and silk
Cupro is breathable and slick, viscose soft and affordable, silk luxurious but less durable. Compare tuxedo lining fabrics and pick a colour that is yours.

Choose cupro for a lining that breathes and slides easily, viscose for softness at a moderate price, and silk if you value luxury and accept it will not last as long. The lining is the part onlookers rarely see but the wearer feels all evening: it decides how smoothly the jacket slips over the shirt, how heat escapes, and whether the underarm gives out after a few years.
What a lining does for the jacket
The lining lets the sleeve slide on without dragging the shirt, covers the internal construction (shoulder padding, canvas) and helps the jacket keep its shape. In a hot, humid climate it also affects whether the wearer feels stuffy. For the structure behind it, see how a tuxedo jacket is built.
Cupro (Bemberg): breathable and slick
Cupro is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from the short fuzz around cotton seeds. Bemberg is the well-known brand name for it. It has a smooth, light face, absorbs and releases moisture well and builds up little static. The hand is close to silk.
It is a practical choice for anyone wearing a jacket often in Saigon: the sleeves slide on easily, perspiration does not linger, and the fabric outlasts viscose with long use. It costs a little more than ordinary viscose.
Viscose: soft and more affordable
Viscose is also regenerated cellulose, but made from wood pulp. It is soft, fluid, breathable and more comfortably priced. In many suits, viscose is the default lining.
The weak point is that viscose loses strength when damp, so in high-perspiration areas such as the underarm and back it can wear or split at the seam sooner than cupro. If you wear the jacket a lot or perspire heavily, that is worth weighing.
Silk: luxurious, less durable
A silk lining feels slick and cool and carries a distinct richness, visible each time you open the jacket. But silk is sensitive to sweat and friction. At the underarm it can stain, turn brittle and eventually tear over a long time. It also usually costs considerably more and needs careful handling.
It suits a jacket worn on few occasions and hung carefully, rather than one worn for weeks on end.
Polyester: worth knowing so you can avoid it
Polyester lining is cheap and strong but does not breathe, builds static and holds heat. For a tuxedo worn in warm places, ask for an explanation if your consultant proposes it without one.
Quick comparison
| Lining | Breathability | Feel | Durability | Price level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cupro (Bemberg) | Good | Slick, cool | Good | Medium |
| Viscose | Good | Soft, fluid | Medium, weaker when damp | Lower |
| Silk | Good | Rich, cool | Lower | High |
| Polyester | Poor | Slick, static-prone | Good | Low |
Coloured linings: a personal touch
The lining is where you can personalise a jacket without disturbing its correct outward look. A discreet black or midnight jacket can carry a wine-red, emerald or silver-grey lining. It shows only when you take the jacket off or the wind lifts a lapel, so this touch is personal rather than showy.
You can add embroidered initials or a name on the inside where the style allows. We cover these options in personalising a made-to-measure tuxedo. To judge a lining colour against the body cloth and the bow tie, view the swatches side by side under lamp light, since linings often look darker than they do on screen.
Half-lined or fully lined
The lining fibre is only half the story; the other half is how far the jacket is lined. A half-lined jacket is lighter and cooler, well suited to hot weather, while a fully lined one is neater and looks better with the jacket off. Our comparison of full lining, half lining and unlined jackets goes through the options.
When to ask your tailor
Ask your consultant which lining is used for the model you choose, because not every lining is available in every cloth line. At a Mon Amie showroom you can see the lining swatches in person and book a fitting to choose the lining together with the body cloth.
