Why Business Owners Should Keep a Tuxedo in the Wardrobe

Galas, award evenings, dinners with overseas partners and press photos: why a leader should own one correct, well-fitting tuxedo, ready at short notice.

People in business often receive formal invitations with little warning: an association gala, an award evening, a dinner with partners flying in from abroad. Having a well-fitting tuxedo already in the wardrobe means you accept at once, without rushing to hire or commission one. That is the most concrete reason a business owner should own a suit.

Occasions that call for a tuxedo

Corporate life has its familiar events where the invitation reads black tie or formal evening wear:

  • Galas and dinners of associations and business circles. Many organisations hold an annual gala, a term-end evening or a launch. See also business association galas.
  • Award and recognition evenings. When you are honoured, or seated at a key guest table, your clothing is closely observed.
  • Dinners with foreign partners. Many international partners are accustomed to formal dress codes on ceremonial occasions. See hosting overseas partners at an evening dinner.
  • Company anniversaries, openings and major signings. Press and cameras are present at these.

Leadership image in press photographs

For someone running a company, event photographs often travel far beyond the evening itself: onto news pages, internal bulletins, company profiles, social media. In those pictures the person at the head is usually looked at the longest.

A tuxedo helps because it is clean, high in contrast and not tied to any single year, so the photographs remain usable for years. The article on why tuxedos photograph so well explains the technical reasons. What matters is the fit: a well-fitting suit reads as composed, while a loose or tight one shows immediately on camera.

Ready for the short-notice invitation

Formal invitations do not always arrive weeks ahead. Sometimes the card comes shortly before the date, or you are asked at the last minute to represent your company. If you have to begin by finding a place to hire, getting measured, choosing a model and size while your diary is full, you tend to choose in haste and the result is rarely what you wanted.

A tuxedo already made, fitted and adjusted, hanging in the wardrobe with shirt and accessories prepared, removes that worry entirely. For a busy person, the convenience is real.

One correct suit is enough

A business owner does not need several tuxedos. One classic black or midnight blue, correctly cut in good cloth, covers most occasions. In black, TUX-027 is a classic black three-piece with peak lapels; TUX-047 is a black tuxedo with shawl collar in a deep black cloth called Super Black. Both sit in the classic black collection.

Choosing one that is really right is usually better than buying several that are merely acceptable. When you want to change the mood, swap the accessories: bow tie, pocket square, cufflinks. The frame stays standard.

If you are weighing hire against bespoke, look at your own calendar. Someone who regularly accepts invitations should reckon by cost per wear; the guide to cost per wear of a tuxedo offers a simple method.

A few notes when commissioning

  • Cut for the job. Business owners sit in meetings, drive and stand shaking hands for long periods. Tell the specialist so the jacket stays comfortable at the shoulder and sleeve in motion.
  • Breathable cloth. Crowded ballrooms get warm. A light, breathable wool is more comfortable.
  • Matched accessories. Keep a pleated-front or piqué-bib shirt, bow tie and patent shoes ready. Storing them together stops you forgetting an item.
  • Body shape. If your weight still changes a lot, say so in advance so the specialist can allow for seam allowances.

How Mon Amie can help

If you do not yet own one, start with a measuring session and a conversation about your events over the coming year. From that, a specialist will suggest a style and cloth to suit your work. See our made-to-measure tuxedo service and book a fitting at a showroom.
