Rent or Tailor a Tuxedo? How to Decide by Occasion and Budget
Should you rent or have a tuxedo made? Fit, choice and cost per wear compared, with practical advice for grooms, groomsmen and guests from Mon Amie tailors.

If you only need a tuxedo once, fit off-the-peg sizes easily and are not fussy about the cloth, renting makes good sense. If you expect to wear evening dress several times over the next few years, you are a groom who wants something truly your own, or your build is hard to fit from stock, a made-to-measure tuxedo is the better investment. Here is how we usually help clients weigh the two.
When renting is the sensible choice
Renting suits these situations:
- A one-off occasion: a gala, a friend's wedding or an awards night when you are not sure another invitation will follow.
- Groomsmen and family: several matching outfits needed at short notice, each worn for a single day.
- Trying a style: you are not yet sure whether a shawl or peak lapel, black or midnight blue suits you, and want to wear it before committing.
- A well-proportioned build: shoulders, chest and waist in standard proportions, so a stock size with light alterations fits well.
Mon Amie offers tuxedo rental through thuevest.vn: you try on in the showroom, alterations are made for fit, and cleaning is included in the service. Rental prices depend on the model, so ask a consultant for specifics. Details are on our tuxedo rental page.
The limits of rental
Rental garments are cut on a general block so that many people can wear them. A tailor can adjust trouser length, sleeve length and take in the waist within limits, but shoulder width, jacket length and shoulder slope are all but fixed. For men with sloping or uneven shoulders, a fuller stomach or longer-than-average arms, this is where a rented tuxedo struggles to fit as it should.
Choice is also limited to what is in stock: you pick from the rail, not from the cloth book. In wedding season the model you like may already be booked, so arrange your fitting early.
Finally, the outfit in your wedding photographs goes back to the rail after the day. For many grooms that does not matter; for some it is reason enough to have one made.
When to have one made
Made-to-measure is worth it when:
- You wear evening dress regularly: year-end parties, business association galas, friends' weddings, partner events. A classic black tuxedo serves for years.
- You are the groom: you want something with your own signature, fitted line by line, and kept as a memento.
- Your build is hard to fit from stock: very tall, very slim, broad-shouldered, carrying weight at the front, or with uneven shoulders.
- You want to choose the details: the cloth, the lapel style, satin or grosgrain facings, covered buttons, braided trousers, a pleated shirt, waistcoat or cummerbund.
A made-to-measure tuxedo is cut to your own measurements, tried on your body and refined across fittings. After you collect it, alterations are still available if needed. The full process is set out in our guide to the tuxedo tailoring process.
Rental and made-to-measure compared
| Rent | Made to measure | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower; rental price varies by model | Depends on price line and cloth |
| Fit | Adjustable within limits | Cut to your measurements |
| Choice | Models in stock | Cloth, lapels and details of your choosing |
| Ownership | Returned after the event | Yours, with alterations after collection |
| Preparation | Try on and alter in the showroom | Measuring, cloth selection, fittings; timing varies by model |
| Ideal for | One-off occasions, groomsmen | Repeat wear, grooms, harder-to-fit builds |
Think in cost per wear
Do not compare a single rental with the price of a made-to-measure suit. Estimate how many times you will wear evening dress over the next few years, then compare the total rental cost for those occasions with the price of having one made.
Mon Amie's made-to-measure tuxedos come in three price lines for a two-piece: Essential 4,800,000 – 10,000,000 VND, Signature 10,000,000 – 20,000,000 VND and Heritage above 20,000,000 VND. The price depends on the cloth and details such as satin or velvet facings, a waistcoat or a pleated shirt. See our price list for more.
Owning also brings a few extra costs: accessories (shirt, bow tie, studs, shoes), dry cleaning and somewhere proper to hang it. In return, a well-made tuxedo can be adjusted if your build changes a little, within what the seams allow.
The middle way
Many families settle on a combination:
- The groom has one made, the groomsmen rent: the groom gets his own well-fitted outfit, and the groomsmen rent in the same tone so the photographs look coordinated.
- Own a black tuxedo, rent for variety: the classic black serves most evenings, and you rent ivory or velvet for the occasions that call for something different.
- Rent first, tailor later: try a lapel style and a colour at your first event, then decide what to have made.
If you plan to have a dependable foundation tuxedo made, two easy-to-wear models are the Black Shawl Lapel One-Button Tuxedo (TUX-039) and the Classic Black Peak Lapel Tuxedo (TUX-060). Once you have decided, our made-to-measure tuxedo page sets out the full range of cloths and details.
Rent or tailor, start early
Rental needs time for fitting and alterations, and diaries fill up in wedding season. For made-to-measure, timing depends on the model and your fitting schedule, and your consultant will give you specifics at measuring. The safe approach is to get in touch as soon as you have a wedding or event date.
