Band-collar shirts with a tuxedo: a deliberate break

A band-collar shirt under a tuxedo means no bow tie and a buttoned neck. It suits Asian-themed evenings and the stage, not an invitation that says black tie.

A band-collar shirt can be worn with a tuxedo, but only when you are deliberately stepping outside black tie. No bow tie, neck fastened to the top, and an overall look closer to art direction than ceremony. It works for Asian-themed evenings, stage events and creative launches; if the invitation says black tie, go back to a turndown or wing collar.

What a band collar is

A band collar (also called a grandad or mandarin collar) is a narrow stand of fabric around the neck with no fold-over leaf. The neckline is clean and upright. The style is familiar from many Asian garments and from the Indian Nehru jacket, so it brings a clear cultural flavour when placed under a tuxedo.

Because there is no leaf, there is nowhere for a bow tie to sit. That is the deciding difference: a hand-tied bow is the signal of black tie, and removing it removes the signal.

When it works and when it does not

It works where the dress code leaves room for invention:

  • Asian-themed evenings, weddings with an Eastern influence, tea receptions.
  • Stage and performance: hosts, performers, guests at a concert or exhibition.
  • Brand launches and design events, where you want to be noticed with restraint.

It does not work when the invitation says black tie, at a traditional wedding ceremony or at a gala that expects a bow. You may be perfectly comfortable, but the outfit will be read as off-code. For the full ladder of dress codes, see what black tie means and our dress code page.

Choosing the lapel: shawl over peak

A round collar stand wants a lapel with the same rhythm. A shawl lapel runs in one continuous curve from neck to button, so it sits naturally with the stand. A peak lapel throws two points toward the shoulders, competes with the vertical line of the band and makes the neck look busy.

A notch lapel sits in between: not wrong, but less harmonious than the shawl. On a black one-button suit such as TUX-067, the seamless satin shawl is a sound base for this collar.

How to wear it cleanly

  • Button the top button. An open band collar looks careless. Having chosen it, fasten it so the stand fits the neck without strangling it.
  • Keep the stand at a moderate height. Too low and the shirt looks collarless; too high and it feels stiff when you turn your head. The tailor adjusts it to your neck length.
  • Keep the front plain. The collar is already the statement. Pleats and rows of studs on top of it become noise. A plain or concealed placket is neatest.
  • Stay with solid colours. White, black or charcoal are all fine, in a fabric with a little drape.
  • Keep the rest classical. Patent black shoes, trousers with a satin stripe, cufflinks at the wrist. A pocket square, if any, in one colour and not loud.

If you like the band-collar idea in the jacket itself, look at TUX-128: a one-piece jacquard jacket with a mandarin collar, no lapels, a covered-button front and jade beading at collar, pockets and cuffs. It is a ceremonial jacket in its own right rather than a tuxedo worn over a band-collar shirt, but it shows the spirit of this collar when it is made with full conviction.

Three questions to ask first

  1. Does the invitation or the host say black tie? If yes, skip the band collar.
  2. Does the theme leave room for an Asian or artistic note?
  3. Are you comfortable being the one who looks different in the room? The band collar is not wrong, but it is always noticed.

If all three answers are comfortable, read more on wearing a tuxedo without a bow tie and on band collars at formal parties.

Ask the tailor before you decide

A band collar looks simple but is hard to make well: the stand must fit at the right height and the seam into the body must lie flat. Bring the invitation or a description of the theme to a Mon Amie showroom and the consultant can tell you whether the occasion accepts a band collar, then measure and make one to suit your neck.
