Yes, in the right place and with the right knit. A tuxedo worn over a fine turtleneck is a recognised look in menswear, and it is handsome at winter parties, gallery openings, concerts and arts events. It is not black tie in the strict sense, though, so do not wear it where the invitation is strict.

Why the look appeals

A turtleneck tidies the line. Instead of a white shirt and a bow that cut across the neck, one run of knit travels from chin to lapel, giving a long, clean, slightly artistic silhouette. When the knit is black or ivory, the tuxedo stays the star and the wool is a quiet backdrop.

What makes it work is that the satin or grosgrain lapel is still there. It reminds the eye that this is a tuxedo and not a blazer.

Choosing the knit

  • Fine gauge, thin wool. Smooth merino or a cashmere blend, tightly knitted. Thick, cabled or fuzzy wool looks coarse and makes the jacket bulge.
  • Black or ivory. Black runs seamlessly into a black jacket; ivory is warmer and softer against midnight blue or burgundy. Avoid bright colours or horizontal stripes.
  • A snug neck, not a loose or doubled-over one. The collar should sit neatly under the chin. A fat folded roll competes with the lapel.
  • A close fit. The body of the knit should not be wider than the jacket, or it will show as creases at the chest and underarm.

Lapel and cut

The shawl lapel is the easiest partner because its soft curve follows the roll neck. A satin peak lapel also works if you want a sharper silhouette, but keep the cut trim so the neckline is not crowded. A narrow notch lapel is less convincing.

Choose a single-button jacket with an open chest so the turtleneck shows as one straight band. If you wear a waistcoat, it should be low-cut, and in practice leaving it off is cleaner for this look.

For a concrete example, TUX-043 is a deep navy jacket with a black satin shawl collar, black trousers and velvet slippers. Swap the shirt for a black turtleneck and you have a quiet, formal-enough look for a concert or an exhibition.

Shoes and finishing touches

Keep the shoes in evening mode: patent leather, opera pumps or velvet slippers all work. Avoid trainers. A pocket square can be omitted or kept as a white one folded flat. You do not need a bow, and shirt studs are pointless; cufflinks are not needed either, since a knit has no double cuff.

Choose a slim watch on a black strap. Keep the satin braid on the trousers if you want the outfit to carry the feel of formal dress; if you drop it, treat the look as smart casual rather than tuxedo.

When not to, and why

It cannot replace the shirt at strict events. For black tie, white tie and many award dinners the dress code names a white shirt, black bow and patent shoes. A turtleneck there counts as a breach, however good it looks. See what black tie means for the levels.

Do not wear it in heat. Thick wool in Saigon at midday is miserable; it makes sense only in cool weather or an air-conditioned room. For colder climates, see wearing a tuxedo in cold weather.

If you want to lose the bow but keep a shirt, read wearing a tuxedo without a bow tie, a lower-risk option.

A note on the red carpet

On red carpets and television, tuxedos with turtlenecks appear often and look natural because the wearers are usually from the arts. That does not mean every occasion accepts them. Read the card: if the words "creative" or "artistic" appear, you are safe; if it says only "black tie", wear the shirt. See also tuxedos on the red carpet.
