Tuxedo vs regular wedding suit for grooms
A wedding suit has self-cloth lapels; a tuxedo has satin lapels and suits evening receptions. Choose by ceremony time, venue and theme, with a style guide.

A regular wedding suit is a coloured suit with lapels in the same cloth as the jacket, easy to wear from a daytime ceremony to the reception. A tuxedo has satin-faced lapels and braided trousers, and carries the spirit of an evening gala. The right choice for a groom comes down to three things: the time of day, the venue and the overall theme.
The regular wedding suit: flexible and colourful
A typical wedding suit is bespoke wool in anything from pale grey, stone or navy to moss green or chestnut brown. The lapels are self-cloth, the buttons match the cloth, and pockets may be flapped. Its biggest advantage is reuse: after the wedding, the groom can keep wearing it to work, dinners and meetings.
A coloured suit suits daytime weddings, garden or outdoor receptions, beaches, and rustic, boho or countryside themes. In those settings a satin-faced tuxedo can feel too formal.
The tuxedo: formal for the evening
A tuxedo is evening dress. Satin or grosgrain lapels catch the light at the chest, the buttons are covered, the pockets are jetted, the trousers braided, and it is worn with a bow tie and dress shirt. The traditional colours are black or midnight blue. A groom in a tuxedo gives the whole set of wedding photographs a gala air: clean lines, little fuss, at home in hotels and fine restaurants.
TUX-124 is a neat option: black, two buttons, satin-faced notch lapels, a black-button shirt and a black bow tie. It gives a black tie feel while staying easy to wear for a first-time tuxedo wearer. Our guide on the groom's tuxedo goes deeper on colour and lapels.
Choosing by time, venue and theme
Time of day. A morning or midday ceremony calls for a lighter or neutral coloured suit. A reception from late afternoon onwards, especially after dark, is when a tuxedo works at its strongest, because evening light brings out the satin.
Venue. Hotel ballrooms, theatres and classic restaurants suit a tuxedo. Gardens, beach resorts and rustic cafes suit a coloured suit. If the venue has an evening dress code, a tuxedo looks right.
Theme. If the bride wears a gown with a long train, the groomsmen are matched and the evening follows a black tie spirit, choose a tuxedo. If the table settings are soft and pastel, the groom can pick a light blue or stone suit to fit in.
A guide by wedding style
| Wedding style | Suggested choice | Colour and lapel |
|---|---|---|
| Evening reception in a five-star hotel, a luxurious theme | Tuxedo | Black or midnight blue, satin peak or shawl lapel |
| Simple evening dinner at a restaurant | Tuxedo with notch lapel, or a dark suit | Black, navy; satin-faced notch for ease |
| Daytime church ceremony, lunch reception | Coloured suit | Mid-grey, navy, notch lapel |
| Outdoor, garden or rustic | Light or brown suit | Stone, light grey, moss green; tie optional |
| Beach or resort | Linen suit or ivory dinner jacket | Light colours; see our white tuxedo guide |
| Two-part day: morning ceremony, evening party | Two outfits, or one versatile tuxedo | Suit for the ceremony, tuxedo for the party |
Coordinating with groomsmen and the bride
An easy rule: the groom should stand out slightly from the groomsmen, not disappear among them. If the groomsmen wear grey suits, the groom can wear a black tuxedo. If they also wear tuxedos, the groom can differ in waistcoat, bow tie or lapel. As for the dress, an ivory gown pairs well with black and midnight blue; avoid a colour that clashes with the bridesmaids.
